How A Backflow Preventer will protect your water

Having a Backflow Preventer is extremely beneficial to the water in your home.  Your water supply in your home Is kept at a high pressure so water will easily come out of any tap in your home.

When it comes to sewage system they are not pressurized, and if anything happens to increase the pressure of the exit drain or decrease your water supply pressure, this can cause backflow.

According to research, there are almost 10,000 reported case of backflow contamination each year and this could be extremely harmful to you and your family. In some cases, the contamination can lead to fatalities if it’s major.

Paul says the best way to stop this issue is by installing a Backflow Prevention Device.  A backflow preventer is a device that’s installed on your home’s water pipes that allows water to flow in one direction. Basically, the sole job is to prevent your drinking water from being contaminated to any type of backflow. There are two types of Backflow Preventer devices. They are:

  • Air Gap- it’s a simple device between open space that would connect to a plumbing system. Basically, it is placed anywhere that large amounts of water can collect or pile up
  • The other type of device is a Specialized Backflow Preventer Valve. Only a licensed plumber would know where to install this valve because it is installed in a strategic place that the plumber knows contamination is entering your water pipes.

If you want to keep your family safe, then the importance of Backflow Preventer is extremely important. It allows the water to flow safely through your house without contaminants or pollutants affecting your family. Getting your Backflow checked at least once a year by a licensed professional will also ensure that everything is functioning properly and that there are no contaminants. Many people don’t realize the importance of the preventer, but they don’t realize what kind of damage these contaminants and pollutants can do to your body.

How to Clean A Keurig!

How to Clean A Keurig

I’m sure many of you LOVE Coffee,,(who doesn’t?); If you use a Keurig Coffee Machine, have you ever actually taken some time to clean it? All you’ll need is a dry cloth, some water, white vinegar, and some soap as well. It’s a few simple steps

These are some simple Instructions to clean it:

  1. Unplug the machine:It's a simple but important step.
  2. Disassemble and wash removable parts:Remove the water reservoir and lid, mug stand, and also the K-cup holder. Wash these pieces in warm, soapy water and dry.
  3. Wipe machine surface:With a clean, dry cloth (or a damp cloth where needed), wipe the surface of the machine. Don't forget the area around the coffee pod holder where coffee and tea granules may collect. Return all the removable parts and plug in the machine.
  4. Grab the vinegar: White distilled vinegar will help descale (remove lime and scale buildup) your coffee maker, which is key to helping it run. (You can also use a descaling solution.) Fill the water reservoir halfway with vinegar.
  5. Add water: Fill the reservoir the rest of the way with water.
  6. Run the machine: Start the brew cycle without inserting a K-cup. Repeat until reservoir is empty, discarding the mug contents after each brewing cycle. This process will help remove lime and scale buildup. Keurig recommends descaling your brewer at least every 3 to 6 months depending on your water source.
  7. Repeat rinse with water:Repeat the process using only plain water in the reservoir to remove any residual vinegar taste.
  8. Use as usual: Then, when you're ready you can brew a cup of coffee like normal.

Make sure you protect your family’s health by cleaning your Keurig!

Get Ready for the Cold!

You always hear about how important it is to get your Heating System prepared for the winter. Have you ever realized how important it is to make sure your plumbing is prepared for the cold?

Plumbing Damage to your home could lead to thousands in repairs! Especially with the holidays quickly approaching, you are going to need your plumbing system operating at 100 percent! Our technicians here at PAC Plumbing, Heating, & A/C are here to ensure that everything in your home is running smoothly and efficiently!

In the freezing cold weather, there are possibilities that pipes may freeze. If water freezes within the pipe it can cause it to expand and crack the pipe.  The water that expands into ice within the pipe can cause an increase in water pressure.  You can do a few things to try and protect your pipes. You can install pipes in an insulated place or you can fit pipes with insulating sleeves or wrap them.  If you notice your water flow slowing down or have a fear of frozen pipes, contact PAC immediately!

Also another tip would be to turn off all of your outside water valves to prevent frozen pipes.

Did you prepare for the cold weather? Call Paul today and get your heating system checked out! 347-343-3750

How to make your Heating System more efficient and save yourself $

It’s the beginning of October and Summer is over. You know what’s right around the corner, the COLD WEATHER! It’s time to get that Heating System ready to go for the extreme temperatures ahead of us.  Make sure your heating system is running at it’s peak efficiency.

Efficiency is a very important term in our industry.  The dictionary defines efficiency as, “the state or quality of being efficient or able to accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort; a competence in performance.”  Our goal is to provide the most efficient equipment for our clients. We want to make sure our clients have equipment that is always performing at a high level without using too much energy or wasting your $$$$.

There are ways that YOU can keep your equipment running as efficient as possible. Here are some of them:

  1. Change your filters- You can improve the performance of a forced air system by changing your filters every couple of months. This will help avoid debris from wearing down your unit and help it run more efficient.
  2. Bleed your Radiators- Start up the boiler and let your heat run. Open the bleeder valve on each radiator and have a bucket/container close by to catch the water. Once the air stops and water starts to come out, close the valve.
  3. Insulation – Sometimes if your house is poorly insulated, you may experience heat loss. You want to consider adding insulation in your open spaces to prevent warm air from escaping your home. You can also insulate your pipes and ducts to save energy as well. Pipe and Duct Wrapping keeps the warm air circulating in the spaces you want conditioned.
  4. Use PAC to tune up your unit – Make sure you have all HVAC units serviced periodically by PAC to make sure it runs at the highest possible level. Our Technicians will perform a comprehensive cleaning and check up to make sure everything is good to go before the cold weather hits.

These are just a few ways that you can increase efficiency before the heating system begins.

Tankless over a Tank?

Hey, it’s Paul and I’m here to tell you why Tankless Water Heaters are the way to go!

How does a Tankless Water Heater Work? It’s actually very simple.  The major difference between a Regular Tank Water Heater vs. a Tankless is the fact the Tankless heaters will only heat water when its needed and by doing so this eliminates the need for a storage tank, and the need to have standing water sitting in the tank.

Tankless Water Heaters never run out of hot water. They are more efficient and take up a lot of less space! They are usually installed on walls (see picture above).

The $savings is great as well! By switching to a Tankless Water Heater, you can shave as much as 20 percent from your water heating bill. Yes, the initial cost is High and a lot more than a Tank Heater, but in the long run you are Saving money and many of these Tankless units are eligible for a federal tax rebate of about $300!
