Causes of a Running Toilet and how to fix it!

Hearing a toilet constantly running can be one of the most irritating sounds you can hear. It’s a very annoying problem that can easily be fixed. Fact is, if your toilet is running all day every day, research shows it can waste up to 6,000 gallons of water per month! First Let’s look at the reasons for your running toilet!
1. Flapper- You may need to replace your flapper. This could be from the flapper being too old or perhaps it’s damaged. A simple flapper replacement can easily fix this problem.
2. Chain- Sometimes the chain in the back of the toilet is damaged or twisted up and this can be a cause for a running toilet. Sometime the chain may be to short and prevents the flapper from closing properly which causes water to flow into the toilet bowl. This can be resolved simply by adjusting or replacing the chain.
3. Worn out Seal- Sometimes an old seal at the bottom of the fill valve or overflow tube can cause water to leak into the toilet or at the bottom of it. A simple solution for this would be just to replace the worn-out seal.
4. Broken Fill Valve- A broken fill valve can cause a consistent flow of later which constantly will lead to refill cycles. Your fill valve is extremely important because it controls the flow of water into your toilet’s tank.
These are the most common reasons for your running toilet. Most of them are not too difficult to fix and can be done in a timely fashion. Heat Trace

It’s been a very cold winter so far and it’s important to make sure that your pipes can withstand the cold. That’s why it is extremely important for Heat Tracing. Heat tracing is used to maintain the temperature of Pipes.  The electric heating is achieved by using a resistant element that runs alongside the piping.  Trace Heating becomes an electrical heating element that runs in physical contact along the length of the pipe. That pipe is usually covered with thermals insulation to retain heat losses from the pipe. Heat Tracing is used to protect pipes from freezing and to maintain a constant flow temperature in hot water systems.

The primary function of heat trace cable systems Is to prevent freezing within water pipes and to prevent pipes from bursting. By maintain a certain temperature in the pipes, this will ensure that frost cannot build up and these pipes will freeze. Heat Tracing also provides heat maintenance and heat recovery in the process as well.  Self-regulating heating tape adjusts heat output to equal the amount of heat lost from the pipe work. Thermal insulation is also recommended on all types of heat trace applications. Without any insulation for the pipes, surface heat can approximately increase about 4-5 times.

Heat Tracing is extremely important this time of year. Industrial heat trace cables maintain the temperature of non-flowing fluids by replacing the heat lost through the thermal insulation on pipes, vessels and other equipment. We hit a very cold period from late December to early January, and many people had pipes that were not ready for that type of weather. Make sure this time around you are protected and don’t have to pay thousands of dollars for repairs. Call P.A.C. today to protect your pipes from busting or freezing!!

Winter Weather Watch

Last week on Paul’s Pro Tips we discussed the importance of plumbing and heating tips before the winter. Well, the first big snow storm has hit NY and it was a big one! Hopefully your home’s heating unit was functioning properly yesterday and kept your family warm! If not, make sure that you get everything checked out to ensure you are ready for the next big storm! It’s important to realize that during these storms the temperature will drop to dangerously low! Also like we stated last week, it’s important to realize that during cold temperatures like these your pipes can freeze at any moment. Make sure you follow these tips BEFORE the big storm to avoid any heating or plumbing issues.

  • Before the storm make sure your home is well insulated
  • Make sure to shut off water valves to avoid a pipe bursting.
  • Winterize your home before the winter storm
  • Make sure your home consists of enough blankets and warm clothes for emergency situations like power outages or if your heating system stops functioning
  • You can create an emergency storm kit, so everything needed is in one place as well. It’s recommended to have extra batteries, flashlights, candles, matches etc.

Please just make sure you are properly prepared for snowstorms this coming winter. As we can see already in early January, it’s going to be an extremely cold winter so it’s even more important to make sure your heating system is properly running.
