Tank or Tankless Water Heater?

When purchasing a Hot Water Heater for your home, it’s important to decide which unit is better for your home.  There are differences among that two that can play a role in deciding which one is the best fit for your home. Here is a breakdown of the main components of each unit.

Traditional Tank Water Heater

  • A Traditional Water Heater can store and preheat about 30-50 gallons of Water in a Tank.
  • The water that is preheated is used whenever someone uses the hot water in their house.
  • After usage, the tank refills to be reheated.
  • They are a lower initial cost and very easy to replace.
  • Some of the cons of the traditional Water Heater are that they have a shorter life and sometimes can possibly even run out of hot water in rare cases. (Purchasing a larger tank will avoid this kind of problem)

Tankless Water Heater

  • Uses a Heat source to Warm up the Cool Water rather than storing hot water in the tank
  • You will save money on your energy bill in the long run. Energy.gov states that “homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, tankless water heaters can be 24%-34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.
  • They last almost double the traditional life of a Regular Water Heater and they provide two to three gallons of hot water per minute on demand.
  • They cost slightly more to install but you are getting more bang for your buck with the Tankless Water heater.

Which is better?  Well, a traditional storage tank type water heater has a shorter life span, can run out of hot water, takes up more space, and leaves you with a higher gas bill.  BUT!  The traditional storage tank type water heater is less expensive.  The tankless water heater is smaller, uses less energy to create hot water saving on utility bills, and has a longer lifespan than traditional tanked water heaters.  BUT!  The cost to install is higher especially if you have to retrofit in an existing space.

Importance of a Backflow Preventer

A Backflow Preventer is extremely important because it eliminates the contamination and pollution that is affecting your water supply. It’s important to have your backflow preventer inspected yearly as well by P.A.C. to ensure that it’s functioning properly.  According to research, there are almost 10,000 reported case of backflow contamination each year and this could be extremely harmful to you and your family. In some cases, the contamination can lead to fatalities if it’s major. There are two types of Backflow Preventer devices. They are:

  • Air Gap- it’s a simple device between open space that would connect to a plumbing system. Basically, it is placed anywhere that large amounts of water can collect or pile up
  • The other type of device is a Specialized Backflow Preventer Valve. Only a licensed plumber would know where to install this valve because it is installed in a strategic place that the plumber knows contamination is entering your water pipes.

If you want to keep your family safe, then the importance of Backflow Preventer is extremely important. It allows the water to flow safely through your house without contaminants or pollutants affecting your family. Getting your Backflow checked at least once a year by a licensed professional will also ensure that everything is functioning properly and that there are no contaminants. Many people don’t realize the importance of the preventer, but they don’t realize what kind of damage these contaminants and pollutants can do to your body.

Do yourself a favor, call P.A.C. today and make sure your family is drinking CLEAN water!

How to Prepare your home for Thanksgiving

It’s the holiday season! On behalf of P.A.C., we’d like to wish everyone a healthy and happy Thanksgiving! When hosting a big event like Thanksgiving, you want to make sure you’re house is comfortable and the plumbing functions correctly. Food will be prepared, dishes will be washed, and fun times await. Don’t let leaking pipes, clogged drains, or a broken heating system ruin your big day.
Here are some important Plumbing Tips to prepare for Thanksgiving
• Make sure your toilets are flushing. You want to make sure that there is no blockage. A clogged toilet is the last thing you need after a Thanksgiving Dinner.
• Use BioOne to clean and maintain your drains. You are going to be using your sinks a lot during the holidays, so you want to make sure your drains are clean and ready to go. By using the environmental friendly BioOne, you can ensure that your drains will flow smoothly, and you will not be using any harmful chemicals.
• If you can’t grab your hands on a bottle of BioOne (which you really should by the way), I recommend using natural chemicals for your drain cleaning such as baking soda, salt, vinegar etc. If a problem is still occurring, then you will need to call P.A.C. for a drain snaking

Here are some Important Heating Tips to prepare for Thanksgiving
• First thing you should do and should have done by now is have your heat tuned up. Get your Furnace or Boiler cleaned out, take out all the debris, put in a brand-new filter and you should be ready to go for the season. By completing a tune up, your system will run more efficiently, and it will save energy.
• Clean your Air Ducts. By doing a duct cleaning, you are eliminating any clogs and you will allow air to distribute easier throughout your home. This will also lead to decreased energy bills because the system will be running more efficiently.
• If it is extremely cold out and your heat isn’t working, then it is highly recommended you request emergency service from P.A.C. to fix the problem!

The Holidays are a great time to spend with family, friends and loved ones. If you don’t properly take care of your home before, it can cause a major disaster for everyone. Call P.A.C. for all of your Plumbing and Heating needs!
